Kim Young-hee grew up in South Korea under a single mother, and she and her sister had to start working at young ages. She was working as an accountant at a nightclub catering to American servicemen when she met the man who would become her husband — an African American father serving in the U.S. military. Together they had a son, Hines. When the family moved to Georgia, Kim Young-hee arrived in a country where she barely knew the language, carrying the hope of a new life for her family.

After her marriage ended, Kim Young-hee was left to raise Hines alone in Georgia — a place where she did not speak the language, did not have a community, and did not have the security she had imagined.
